Jaisalmer is a beautiful city in the state of Rajasthan. It is named after Maharawal Jaisal Singh, a Rajput king who founded the city in 1156 AD.[1] "Jaisalmer" Jaisalmer is also known as "Golden City of India" because the yellow sand and the yellow sandstone used in every architecture of the city. It is located in the heart of Thar Desert, 575 kms. Away from the city of Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan. The city is situated near Indo-Pak border.

The ideal time to visit Jaisalmer is from October to the month of March, although the city witnesses tourists throughout the year. Sadar bazaar is wholesale and retail market at Jaisalmer. You can find everything from paintings, handicrafts which are the specialty of the city. You can get the best handicrafts in seema gram. Jaisalmer is also famous for its mirror work and please buy sliver jewellery and camel leather shoes. The desert festival of Jaisalmer is famous throughout the world and it is on the wish list of every tourist. It represents the rich culture and tradition of Rajasthan.

Food of Jaisalmer is just great. Dal baati choorma must be tried. It is a vegetable dish (dal) prepared from lentils cooked in Rajasthani spices, bati, round balls of hard bread and choorma is a Rajasthani sweet dish. Similarly kadhi pakoda & ker sangri should also be given a taste. The Jaisalmer fort is a major point of attraction for the tourists. There are many havelis in the city like ‘Salim ji ki haveli & Nathmal ji ki haveli. Several religious places are also there like Tanot mata mandir & the Jain temples. Beside Jain temple there is Amar Sagar Lake which is quite interesting because the lake is dry. Without taking camel rides the trip to Jaisalmer is incomplete. Camel is also known as ‘ship of the desert’ and camel rides are not that costly and should be given a chance.

If you are adventurous and believe in ghosts then you must visit Kuldhara village. It’s an abandoned village on the city outskirts and it is said that the village is haunted & whoever tries to dwell in this village eventually dies. Jaisalmer fort is the biggest attraction of the city and was built by ‘Raja Jaiswal. it ranks amongst the largest forts in the world and Near Jaisalmer fort you will find silk route art gallery which displays quilt and carpet artwork of Rajasthan. History lovers are adviced to visit ‘The Thar heritage museum ‘. It is owned by L.M.Khatri and he himself takes you a way around the museum. There is a vast collection of photographs of the desert life and I’m sure you will enjoy the visit to the museum.
